HOW MANY LIGHTNING HITS BECOME
CLOSE CALLS FOR YOU EACH YEAR?

Lightning data provided by

100,000 thunderstorms annually produce
over 20 million strokes of unpredictable lightning.
|
| Depending upon where you live in the U.S., sheer luck plays a greater role than you know in the life or death game of avoiding lightning strikes. Given the number of strokes that occur within 1500 feet of you in a normal storm season, most people rely on a false sense of security. This color-coded map shows five years (1996-2000) of accumulated cloud-to-ground lightning strikes recorded across the United States by the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network. The color-codes indicate the average number of ground strikes per square mile in a given region. In an average year, the United States experiences 100,000 thunderstorms which produce over 20 million strokes of lightning.

COMMON SENSE MISTAKES ABOUT
LIGHTNING DETECTION
CAN BE DEADLY
|
|
| |
- Waiting to see or hear the first stroke of lightning means that you've been at risk of a direct lightning strike for 30 minutes or more already.
- Waiting for 15-30 minutes after you think a storm has passed doesn't guarantee that the danger of lightning has passed. Storms can stall nearby, or new storms can move close enough to be a danger.
- The "counting method" of calculating the distance to a storm is almost always useless in determining exactly where and how many storm cells may be a direct lightning threat to you at a given moment.
